The Sketchbook

well that’s the last time I let someone else design a flyer for me. God it is awful. However, COME IF YOU CAN! It will be a great time for the Georgetown art attack! I promise my art will make up for this terribly designed flyer.

Struggles of the artist

As an artist I struggle a lot, and often. I struggle with ideas of what art should be, what it should not be, defining those personally so I can demand more of myself. I don’t hold many others to those ideas, the ideas themselves are tools to demand what I need to say.

Going to college to get a bachelors in fine art was the best and worst thing I have ever done for my desire to be an artist. I would not be as skilled as I am now, nor would I think about what the art is about as much by a long shot. Not to mention just how much easier it is to figure out what other people may get from an art piece based on many, many, maaaannny reviews and critiques. (Critiques are never about the artist, they are about the art, or the person who is critiquing the art.)

However, I believed to much of what teachers, other students, art critics, artists, and essays told me art needed to be. I believed them. How often does art seem like it is not my own? Almost always. It is my voice, but it is in a language that others have taught me to speak in.

And some days, I just do not know what to say with your words.

“Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its colour are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers” — ~Sherlock Holmes; The Adventure of the Naval Treaty (via timetravelingscamp)

Paaaaainting!
Sometimes its just good to sit down and paint. I’m still debating on what to do with this, if anything more. Its an experiment because it is on paper with matte medium and the oil already soaked through a bit. I knew it would probably happen, I just didnt know I’d like the painting so much.

Larger than life

So bored with realistic art that is simply huge. Whhhheeee…. its on a large scale! Someones eyes! Someones face! Someones hands!

Don’t care. Give me something with passion, inspiration, emotion, and keep your bland large scale photo realistic art that does not make me think, hope, long, or dream.

Pointless waste of paper and or canvas.

Yeah, I’m judgmental. We all are under our pretty polite facades.
